How Selling Works
An Alex Cooper representative will provide you with an idea of its market value and salability at auction. Supported by our data base, our appraisers have knowledge and experience in the judgment of an item’s market, value and selling points.
There are several ways in which to obtain a pre-sale evaluation: bring in your property to our gallery location, click on our “Sell an item at an upcoming auction” link, or you are welcome to mail photos to our gallery, 908 York Road, Towson, MD 21204. Please include your address and phone number, and as much detail as possible.
Before consigning at Alex Cooper, our representative will provide you with detailed consignment terms along with a formal consignment contract for your review so you fully understand and feel comfortable with the auction process.
When you are ready to sell, we are ready to make sure your property is a sought after item on auction day. Prior to main gallery auctions, a multi-day exhibition is open to the public, allowing maximum exposure of your property. We also provide professional cataloguing and extensive marketing to expose your items to the largest possible venue. Alex Cooper’s advertising campaign includes local and national publications, direct mail, and extensive internet exposure.
A near-universal practice in the auction industry, a buyer's premium is a percentage charged by the auction house and added to the hammer price of the lot to be paid by the winner. Please read the terms to determine the buyer’s premium for the specific auction.
After the auction, you will be paid by check, along with a full detailed accounting of each lot’s sale price and itemized charges approximately three weeks after the auction. If applicable, an accounting of unsold items will be sent approximately one week post-auction. You, the consignor, are responsible for arranging removal of unsold property or contacting our gallery to discuss other means of handling your property.
